The '''The Refuge''' or the '''The Refuge of Stone''' is an apocryphal underground city on [[Canticle]] believed to have been created by the [[Sunlit Ones]] long ago.{{book ref|tsm|11}} The Sunlit Ones were said to have been able to take in the sunlight and use it rather than being destroyed and were therefore able to stay in one place long enough to build the city beneath the ground using stones that Canticle's sun cannot melt.{{book ref|tsm|11}} As the people on Canticle always need to be moving forward to outpace the sun, Refuge represents a sanctuary from their eternal migration.

[[Beacon|Beacon's]] [[Lodestar]] [[Elegy Salvage]] believed the Refuge to be real and to be the most viable salvation for her people to escape the [[Cinder King]].{{book ref|tsm|15}} After Elegy's capture, [[Zeal]] leads a team of Beaconites to steal the Cinder King's [[Scadrian]] [[ScadrianHaridan's Authorizationauthorization Keykey|authorization key]] believing it to be a key to the Refuge which the Cinder King had found and kept for himself.{{book ref|tsm|12}} [[Nomad]], knowing that the key actually belongs to a Scadrian [[Scadrian research facility|research facility]] agrees to to lead the Beaconites to the door and open it for them.
