In the time before the Recreance the Windrunners were an Order with over a hundred members,{{book ref|sa1|52}} and a considerable number of squires.{{book ref|sa2|54}} They also reportedly had some issues with the [[order of Skybreakers|order of the Skybreakers]].{{book ref|sa2|54}} At the beginning of the Recreance a large number of Windrunners along with many [[Stonewards]] abandoned their [[Shardblade|Shardblades]] and [[Shardplate|Shardplates]] before the fortress known as "Feverstone Keep", as seen in one of [[Dalinar]]'s visions.{{book ref|sa1|52}}
The Windrunners tend to attract “big sibling” types, who seek to protect the defenseless{{wob ref|12085}}, but also enjoy action and fighting for what they believe in. They’re primarily scouts{{wob ref|12085}}, though they often work as special forces groups, able to deliver teams of Radiants behind enemy lines for secret missions. They tend to be the most like conventional soldiers, believing in structures of command, team dynamics, and the importance of a squad of brothers and sisters. They often have larger numbers of squires than other Orders and focus more than any other Order on mastering their weapons.{{wob ref|13772}}
