Difference between revisions of "Order of Bondsmiths"

The Bondsmiths are [[Surgebinder]]s who use the [[Surge]]s of Tension and Adhesion.{{17s ref|topic|4323}}. Adhesion gives the power known to [[Szeth]] as a "[[Windrunners#Powers|full lashing]]", but otherwise it is not known what powers the Bondsmiths have.{{17s ref|topic|4258}} They form a [[Nahel Bond]] with one of three unique [[spren]]: the [[Stormfather]], the [[Nightwatcher]]{{disputed}}{{book ref|sa3|64}}, and (presumably) the [[Sibling]].{{book ref|sa3|64}} The exact nature of the [[Nahel Bond]] that Bondsmiths share with their specific spren is unclear; it may or may not be similar to other orders of the Knights Radiant.

The Tension Surge can be manipulated by the Surgebinder to alter the stiffness of an object.{{book ref|sa2|part=ars}} For Bondsmiths, the use of the Tension surge is different from the [[Stonewards]]. While [[Stonewards]] use this ability to shape stone in battle,{{disputed}} Bondsmiths use it to repair inanimate objects, as a complement to the [[Adhesion]] surge. {{book ref|sa3|59}}

Each Bondsmith shares a [[Nahel bond]] with one of three unique spren: the [[Stormfather]], the [[Nightwatcher]]{{cite}}, and an unnamed [[Sibling|third]] who slumbers. {{epigraph ref|wor|44}}{{book ref|wor|89}}{{book ref|sa3|111}} Bondsmiths typically do not have access to a [[Shardblade]],{{wob ref|date=2017-3-24|3311|Leipzig Book Fair}} although it is possible to 'force' their bonded spren into a shape of power that allows them to activate Oathgates.{{book ref|sa3|100}}

Bondsmiths are able to boost other Radiants' powers. The boost given is different for each Order.{{wob ref|11296}} ThisFor includesexample, boostingallowing a [[Order of Lightweavers|LightweaversLightweaver]] powers to create a three-dimensional projection of [[Roshar]].{{book ref|sa3|8}}

DuringBondsmiths theare [[battle of Thaylen Field]], [[Dalinar Kholin]] displayed the abilityable to use the Surges of Adhesion and Tension, recreatingto recreate [[Honor]]'s [[Honor's Perpendicularity|perpendicularity]] throughby merging the [[Physical Realm|Physical]], [[Cognitive Realm|Cognitive]] and [[Spiritual Realm|Spiritual]] Realms. --This allowingallows gemsthem to bepour out Stormlight and give it to gems or rechargedRadiants, as if in a highstorm,.{{wob whileref|12295}} This also makinglets spren manifest fully in the [[Physical Realm]]. This process is done by 'slamming' both hands that are 'leashing' the Cognitive and Spiritual Realms together, and was referred to by [[Odium]] as 'Ascending'.{{book Thisref|sa3|119}} isWhether an ability not known to exist pre-[[Recreance]], and whether itthis can be used in another Realm beyond the Physical is undetermined.{{cite}} This ability was not possible while Tanavast still lived.

It has been theorized that the Bondsmith spren may be "godspren" -- in other words, the cognitive representation of the people of Roshar's gods. This might explain why Bondsmiths are said to have bound such "specific" spren, and also why there is only three Bondsmiths at any given time. Presumably, this would be due to that fact that there would only be as many powerful "godspren" at any given time as there were heavily worshipped gods on Roshar. Honor (i.e. The Almighty) and Cultivation are two obvious candidates for having "godspren." Indeed, The [[Stormfather]] is already confirmed to be the "godspren" of Honor.{{cite}} Who the other worshipped god could be on Roshar is unclear at this point, though one candidate is the [[Nightwatcher]]. Because there were three gods influencing Roshar, Honor, Cultivation, and Odium, the third may be an Odiumspren, though this is not confirmed. It should be noted that "pious" is the primary divine attribute of Ishar, the Herald of the Order of Bondsmiths. This would seem to fit with the idea of Bondsmiths sharing a Nahel bond with "godspren." Counting weakly against this theory is the description of expanding their ranks as "seditious"; if godspren were understood to be synonymous with the Bondsmith's spren, a more appropriate word would be "sacrilegious".
