At the start of the Siege of Kholinar, their commander died when trying to quell the riots, while their highborn patron went to speak with Queen Aesudan in the Kholinar palace, never to be seen again. At that time, the Wall Guard is actively recruiting any lighteyes who can wield a weapon, regardless of whether they're deserters or even criminals, using free meals as an incentive to join.sa3 When they attempt to recruit Kaladin, he agrees, hoping to learn where the city's food comes from.sa3 He eventually reveals himself to them as a Shardbearer and informs them about king Elhokar's presence in the city, then rallies them to join his group in an assault on the Kholinar Palace.sa3sa3

During the fighting, the Wall Guard suffers tremendous losses, especially when they begin to clash with the listeners as they assault the city.sa3 After the assault fails, Azure is dumped into Shadesmar along with Kaladin, Shallan and Adolin, while the surviving Guard members are captured and inprisoned by the fused.sa3sa3
On arrival in Kholinar Kaladin joins the Wall Guard in an attempt to learn where the food is coming from, eventually being shown Ithi and her sister being kept in a room surrounded by aluminium and soulcasting food for the beseiged city.cite
