Hrathen iswas [[Fjordell]], and like other followers of [[Shu-Dereth]] he viewsviewed [[Aonic]] magic as "heathen".{{book ref|Elantris|12}} Many people in Fjordell dodid not even believe that seons exist.{{book ref|Elantris|12}} Hrathen has always believed that they are real, but he hashad several misconceptions about them, including an assumption that they arewere created by [[Elantrian]]s.{{book ref|Elantris|12}} Hrathen ascendsascended the ranks of the Derethi church and becomesbecame one of twenty gyorns, high priests that directly serveserved [[Wyrn (title)]] [[Wulfden the Fourth]].{{book ref|Elantris|5}} He iswas shocked to learn that Wyrn and the other gyorns each havehad a seon that they useused for communication, and hashad to be convinced by Wyrn over a period of several years that their use by the Derethi iswas justified.{{book ref|Elantris|12}} It is not known how the Derethi church originally obtained the seons.

The seon iswas given to Hrathen and he keepskept her in a steel box with an elaborate locking system; he also keepskept the box itself well hidden.{{book ref|Elantris|12}} Hrathen believesbelieved that the church would be embarrassed if common people knew that it usesused the magic that it condemnscondemned.{{book ref|Elantris|12}} Seons cannot pass through solid matter{{wob ref|7816}} so Hrathen's seon iswas imprisoned, although she makesmade no effort to escape when the box iswas opened.{{book ref|Elantris|12}} She remainsremained unfailingly obedient, but Hrathen still feelsfelt disgust and distrust towards all seons, more so than other gyorns.{{book ref|Elantris|12}} Hrathen's seon iswas generally forbidden to speak, and Hrathen sometimes leavesleft the box unopened for months.{{book ref|Elantris|12}} Their relationship iswas completely different from the loving connections seen between Aonic characters and their seons (such as [[Raoden]]'s with [[Ien]]){{book ref|Elantris|16}} and Hrathen's thoughts and actions arewere incongruous with what is known about the usual nature of the human-seon bond between humans and seons.{{annotation ref|Elantris|chapter=16|link=annotation-elantris-chapter-16}}{{wob ref|10049}}

Hrathen usesused her to contact Wyrn regarding a plot involving [[Telrii]].{{book ref|Elantris|12}} She iswas later used to contact [[Forton]], a use which iswas not sanctioned but not technically forbidden.{{book ref|Elantris|18}} Hrathen procuresprocured some potions from Forton and keepskept them in the box.{{book ref|Elantris|36}} When Hrathen feignsfeigned becoming an Elantrian, someone riflesrifled through his belongings and the box iswas damaged, but the seon iswas not discovered.{{book ref|Elantris|36}}

ItUnbeknownst isto revealed thatHrathen, the [[Dakhor]] [[gragdet]] [[Dilaf]] has always knownknew about Hrathen'shis seon; at one point, he usesused her to contact [[Eventeo]] and threaten him.{{book ref|Elantris|59}} Her fate after Hrathen's death is not known.
