The '''First Contract''' was the metal plate inscribed with the various legal rights and duties of the [[Kandrakandra]] which was the first thing taught to a [[Mistwraithmistwraith]] upon gaining sentience. Although '''the firstFirst generationGeneration''' originally worried about setting up their own legal system outside of the [[Lord Ruler]] so it was taken to him to be approved and signed and it was at this point that they were inscribed on metal plates. <ref name=Epigraph11>{{bref|mb3|e|11}}</ref>

The First Contract came into existence after it was discovered that powerful soothers could take over the body of Kandrakandra and force them to do their will. <ref> {{bref|mb3|C|5}} </ref> It was believed that if the Kandrakandra had a set of laws swearing them into the service of humans who held their contract that there would be no need to try controlling the Kandrakandra in any other way.

Originally just a series of promises made by the First Generation to the Lord Ruler, the First Contract eventually came to describe all rights and duties of the Kandrakandra. They were cast onto metal plates in order to avoid being read or altered by [[Ruin]].<ref name=Epigraph11>{{bref|mb3|e|11}}</ref>

Although not all of the contents of the First Contract is known, a few basic articles are understood. One of the most fundamental tenets was ultimate dedication to the Lord Ruler. Some of the more basic tenets were

*Respect for earlier generations of Kandrakandra.

*Legal rights of all Kandrakandra.

*Provisions for the creation of new Kandrakandra.
