In an AMA leading up to the release of the first book, Brandon stated that the trilogy would likely become a four book series.{{wob ref|10944}} In his 2018 [[State of the Sanderson]], he stated that due to completing work on [[Rhythm of War]], Skyward 3 "won't be written until 2020, for a spring 2021 release."{{wob ref|12479}} In the 2019 State of the Sanderson, this was updated to writing in late 2020 for a "likely" 2021 release.{{wob ref|13544}}
At some point in early 2020, Brandon decided that the book would have two alternating points of view, though it's unclear who would join [[Spensa]] and whether their sections would also be written in first person.{{
