After her mother's death, Shallan didn't speak for five months despite the comfort given to her by her elder brothers, namely Jushu. Instead of drawing as she normally did, all she drew was the scene from the room where her mother and her associate died. Meanwhile, her father becomes violent and easily-enraged, verbally and physically abusing the members of the household.{{book ref|sa2|19}}
