He was a highmarshal in service of Highprince Sadeas, and had to watch over northern Alethkar while his highprince fought in the Vengeance Pact on the Shattered Plains. Because of the continuous skirmishes at Alethkar's borders he was in permanent need of new soldiers. Eventually he came through Hearthstone for recruitment. Hearthstone's citylord Roshone -- apparently Amaram's distant cousin -- committed Tien to be a recruit what resulted in Kaladin's volunteering due to his wish to protect Tien though Amaram promised Lirin to stint Tien's duty to be a messenger boy. Amaram didn't keep his promise and Tien died in his very first battle, leaving Kaladin in a bitter grief.
