Lirin doubted that due to Jam's age difference with Kaladin that he would like to spend time with Kaladin, but Kaladin and [[Tien]] watched Jam while he was trained in the quarterstaff by his father.{{book ref\|sa1\|10}} Jam's father served as a soldier in [[Meridas Amaram\|Brightlord Amaram]]'s army; he was well known to [[Lirin]] because he had operated multiple times on a lingering leg injury. When Kaladin was ten years old, he and [[Tien]] liked to watch Jam train in the quarterstaff with his father.
