The Reod was an event that occurred on Sel prior to the events of Elantris.[1]

The Reod was a massive earthquake that created an enormous chasm in the south of Arelon. It altered the landscape to the point where the Aons used by Elantris, which are based upon the landscape of Arelon, were no longer accurate. On top of this, the Aon that Elantris was in the shape of was damaged. This caused all Aons to cease functioning, reducing the Elantrians to ugly, half-dead things. It was seen by Shu-Keseg and Shu-Dereth as a curse upon the Elantrians for their pagan ways.
