Aona was a Shardholder on Sel. She was killed by Rayse before the events of Elantris took place, and the Shard that she held was Splintered. Very little is actually known about Aona. The only time the name Aona has appeared in the Canonical Cosmere books so far is in the Part 2 epigraphs of The Way of Kings, where we are told that she is dead.
Due to the correlation of names, it seems likely that Aona is the holder of the Shard related to Aon Dor. It has been widely theorized that when Rayse killed Aona and Skai, it caused the Reod, leading to the fall of the Elantrians and setting the stage for Elantris.
