He does his fishing during the nights since fishermen have to pay taxes when fishing during the day.

Eventually his fishing net catches something heavy and, when trying to pull it up, he hears a voice telling him where he has to paddle to get this thing. When he put it out of the water he finds a sword, Nightblood. Nightblood tells Old Chapps to take him to the shore, where Vivenna later finds him.
