Spensa lays in her bunk, thinking about herself, Chet, and the [[delver]]s. She asks Chet how to defeat the delvers, but he doesn't know. After trying to sense M-Bot with no success, Spensa experiments with her cytonic powers, which are strengthened by her connection with Chet. She picks up impressions and images of what her friends had been doing during her absence. Spensa feels responsible for stopping the delvers and protecting [[Detritus]], and that responsibility weighs heavily on her. Chet tries to comfort her, and she gets up to prepare for the day.

;Plot Summary
Spensa attends a formal ceremony where Jorgen is named the DDF admiral of the fleet. In addition to humans, there are also [[kitsen]] and [[UrDail]] in attendance. Spensa watches Jorgen, proud of him for accepting a position she knows he doesn't want. As Jorgen begins to make a speech and the members of Skyward Flight exit the stage, Spensa slips away from the ceremony. She starts patroling the region in a [[Poco]], and hyperjumps into outer space. Spensa reaches out to Doomslug with her cytonic senses. Doomslug is happy to hear from Spensa, but feels like she doesn't belong with the other taynix. Doomslug joins Spensa in the cockpit, and soon after Jorgen contacts Spensa on the comm. He is understanding of her departure, but asks her to join a strategy meeting with him in fifteen minutes.

;Plot Summary
Spensa attends Jorgen's strategy meeting, attended by members of the DDF, the UrDail, and the kitsen. Ironsides explains that the Superiority doesn't actually have that large of a military, since they are spread thin and have to devote resources to policing and protecting all their territory. Winzik's offensive force is relatively small, but he has a massive infrastructure that could produce hundreds of ships by the end of the year. As everyone discusses the grim statistics, Spensa imagines her friends dying one by one, and she loses control of her cytonic abilities, making objects in the room vanish and reappear and the screen on the wall to turn on and off. Unintentionally, she radiates her fears throughout the room, communicating them to everyone present. She regains control, but feels ashamed. Jorgen calls for a short break for refreshments, and suddenly M-Bot speaks into Spensa's mind.

;Plot Summary
Spensa talks to M-Bot cytonically, asking where he's been. He explains that he had to hide from the delvers. After Spensa talks with M-Bot for a bit, Jorgen sits down next to her. Spensa talks a bit about her outburst earlier, and tells Jorgen that M-Bot is alive. They chat for a while, and Jorgen shares that he feels responsible for the fate of Detritus, and that he feels like he's failing. As they talk, Spensa wrestles with her emotions, occasionally making objects in the room vanish or dissapear. She tries to act happy to cheer Jorgen up, and jokes with him about the taynix. As everyone else returns to the meeting room, Spensa looks at the statistics and gets an idea.
