Denth or VaraTreledees is one of the Five Scholars from Nalthis. He may also be a member of the royal line of Idris.

Appearance and Personality

Denth appears to be a man in his thirties. He dresses mostly in nondescript brown leather, but he keeps some color, such as his red vest. He has a long face and styled hair pulled back into a neat short ponytail. He keeps himself well groomed and is clean-shaven. His overall outlook is cynical, likely colored by his own frustration that he finds himself having to do things he feels bad about; he sees himself as a basically good person who has to do terrible things. Denth is smooth-talking and intelligent and proves himself adept at manipulating people.

Attributes and Abilities

Denth is a superb swordsman. He is so quick he can kill most people, even trained warriors, before they can react. Even accomplished fighters such as Vasher are clearly outmatched by him. His reflexes are a product of being a Returned, which means he is also able to change his appearance at will.

Denth is remarkably clever and understands Awakening on an advanced level, as one of the Five Scholars. As a Returned, he could reach the Fifth Heightening if he so chose; as it is, he suppresses his divine Breath. This heightening would grant him:

• Aura Recognition - allows him to assess the number of Breaths a person possesses.
• Perfect Pitch
• Perfect Color Recognition - allows him to instantly and instinctively determine exact shades of colors and their hue harmonics.
• Perfect Life Sense - allows him to sense people around him.
• Agelessness - makes him immune to most toxins and physical ailments, as well as making him functionally immortal.

Denth is a consummate actor and manipulator, able to deceive Vivenna and the other Idrians for months into setting up a war for him.

He did 'not travel the Cosmere widely'.

History

Pre-rebellion

Denth was originally known as VaraTreledees and was a scholar before the Manywar. He initially tried to stop the war, but ultimately took Vasher's side. He has hated Vasher ever since Vasher killed his sister Shashara and does not care that he did it to protect the secret of Awakening steel.

Some time after the Manywar, he took the name Denth and created a mercenary band with Tonk Fah, Jewels, and Arsteel. A couple of months prior to the events of the rebellion, Arsteel encountered Vasher, who killed him. Denth took this opportunity to see how a dead Returned worked, knowing that Arsteel and his fighting expertise could continue to contribute to the crew as a Lifeless named Clod.

Denth also spent time on the planet Roshar, though when and for what purpose remains unclear.

Pahn Kahl rebellion

After Bluefingers hired them to aid the Pahn Kahl rebels in overthrowing the Hallandren government, Denth and his band infiltrated the Idrian spy network as an in with the Idrian residents of T'Telir. Acting as mercenaries working for Lemex, they befriended Vivenna after poisoning Lemex to make it look like he died of illness. Denth used Vivenna to increase tensions between Hallandren and Idris while keeping her ignorant of his true goal. Later, after Vivenna was kidnapped by Vasher, Denth and Tonk Fah tortured and killed Parlin to try and discover where she had gone. When Vivenna escaped from Vasher and returned to the safe house, she found his body and uncovered the truth about Denth and his crew. In the ensuing confrontation, Denth was attacked by Clod on Vivenna's command, and she escaped, eventually teaming up with Vasher to counter Denth's actions.

Death

Denth caught Vasher while he was attempting to rescue Vivenna's sister Siri, who had been sequestered in the God King's palace by his priests. He threw Vasher's sword Nightblood in the bay so it could cause no further harm, then had Vasher hung by his wrists in a room with no color to interrogate him. After retrieving Nightblood, Vivenna assisted in Vasher's rescue. Denth challenged Vasher to a duel once he knew Vasher, who had just drawn Nightblood and therefore was low on Breaths, was too weak to put up much of a fight. Vasher, who was always the less skilled swordsman, transferred what Breath he had left into Denth in order to stun him, then took advantage of the moment and stabbed him. As Denth died, his hair flashed between colors and eventually fell to stark white, revealing that Denth had the Royal Locks independent from being a Returned.

Relationships

• Was one of the Five Scholars. The brother of Shashara and sworn enemy of Vasher, another of the scholars.
• He is the leader of a mercenary band including Tonk Fah, Jewels, and Clod.
• Temporarily pretends to be employed by and allied with Vivenna.
• Actually in the employ of Bluefingers.
