My personal page of theories

Each planet has a number, which is a natural consequence of different elements, the shard, the world, etc. [1] seems like more likely the shards.

[2]

  • Sel: 3? No evidence of that other than the 3 viewpoints of the book.
  • Scadrial: 16
  • Nalthis: 5
  • Roshar: 10
why is it difficult to worldhop to and from Sel

While it probably has something to do with both Shards being splintered, I think the real problem is the shadesmar. WoB: "Do not go to Shadesmar on this world (really, I'm not kidding)". http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=699#4 Of course, I have no idea why the Shadesmar on Sel would be weird, or dangerous. Maybe because both Shards are splintered. There was some WoB where he said that if the power is not taken up, it starts to become sentient, and weird things happen.

What are the methods for worldhopping?

I think if you can get into shadesmar you can do something to worldhop. I also thought that using a shardpool would be a way, somehow like a portal. Here is a weird quote: "Q: The prevailing theory on the 17th Shard is that Hoid worldhops using Shadesmar. Could you confirm or deny that? A: Hoid has indeed gotten between worlds before through Shadesmar. Q: And would you be willing to give us a hint as to how he does that? A: There are hints in the books. There is a hint in the very first cosmere book I released. [that would be Elantris] Which I thought was a huge hint, but so far I haven't seen anyone talking about it."

Which sounds like shardpools put you into shadesmar, which would be fine except Brandon said "Dont go there"

It is interesting that magic on Sel seems to be stronger but more localized.
It is interesting that soulcasting on Roshar and the general magic on Sel (Both Forgery and Aons) is so similar

There is no magic on Scadrial or Nalthis like it. And both of those words have splintered Shards.

Shardpools. On Scadrial it it now in the Elendel Basin?

Q: Is there a similar relationship between Endowment and Hallandren's jungle as there is between Harmony and Elendel Basin ? A: Yes and no. The flowers are being fed by something that's very similar to what you might find on other planets. So the ground is saturated with something that producing a similar effect as Elendel Basin. But it's not the same thing. Elendel Basin was just crafted really really well, and then it was endowed with a little bit of extra help. Here [in Hallandre's jungle] we have this extra seeping into the ground from the pool, which is saturated around and causing the flowers and causing what's going on around there. We'll wait until you've read Words of Radiance.

Before the city Elantris, everyone of that nationality could create Aons

and have the magic do something, but the power was weak. And they could not write in the air, It had to physically created like the other magics.

Sel magic is all programming-based through forms or patterns

Q: Before Sel's Shards were Splintered, were the Investitures there still form-based? A: Umm... yes. Q: Is "form-based" the right word we should use? A: No. It's not really. The are all programming-based. But of course, with true programming, the form doesn't matter, it's the numbers. And in this case the form does

Music or Waveforms as the Focus on Roshar?

In many ways I like this better than thought or intent or belief. I mean, why kind of pattern is thought? The problem is, what waveform is Kaladin ever using? However, why do the parshendi hum? (do they even fit into the magic system? Whoops, different questions. think about spren) And the soul casters hum as they work together? Although Hoid always seems to do his storytelling in song, which could help hide his plans from Odium.

I think Spren are the focus on Roshar.

Now I don't think that is the case. I originally thought that the type of spren you bonded had an impact on the magic, which is does. It has an impact on the type of magic available. However, that bond doesn't trigger the magic. Not like the patterns on Sel or the metal on Scadrial.

While commands are the focus on Nalthis, it is not quite as simple as that.

Because it is only commands combined with very clear mental picture or thought that things can be done.

the ten rings of the path are the 10 rings from Sazed fingers. They survived as relics.

WoB: Speaking of relic-like items, Sazed's rings survived as well. We might see those again. (http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=428#66)

Sazed is actually a member of the 17th Shard

WoB: Sazed is not the Seventeeth Shard. Whether he's IN the Seventeenth Shard is another question. It is an organization. (http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=622#59)

the Oathpact
  • Odium can't leave Braize or at least the system
  • Odium can either have his spren on Roshar (which can be used to make monsters) or have Heralds to torture. Not both.
How did the Seons come into being?

A: We know that Seons are splinters of Devotion, and they did not exist before Odium kill and splintered Devotion. So they were not likely created by purpose by a shard. They are most likely splinters that gained sentience after Devotion splintered. However, they have Aons at their center, which doesn't seem to me to be something that would happen by accident. Sounds like someone found a way to draw an Aon in the air, with a control that would keep the Aon from getting triggered. But when they did, the splintered power built up behind the Aon, enough that the splinter gained sentience.

However, I don't think killing a Shard splinters it's power. I think the splintering of the shard was a purposeful act by Odium: "...and that which they held has been Splintered. Presumably to prevent anyone from rising up to challenge Rayse." (Letter)

Planets control Focus.

I recorded the WOB somewhere here, but B said that if Odium went to Scadriel he would have a hard time seeing metal. I dont think it is a result of Shard Intent. I think the resulting magic is a combination of the Focus (controlled by the planet) and the Intent.
