Reading order[edit]

What should people read before "The Eleventh Metal"? I thought it went along with the first Mistborn trilogy. But its introduction in Arcanum Unbounded talks about Silverlight, shards, Yolen, and fain. It talks as if I'm supposed to know what those are, even though I don't think they were ever mentioned in the first Mistborn trilogy. Does that information come from Elantris, or The Alloy of Law (from Mistborn's Wax and Wayne series), or The Way of Kings (from The Stormlight Archive), or the earlier parts of Arcanum Unbounded, or the Mistborn Adventure Game? - Ebmid2 (talk) 16:50, 22 January 2021 (UTC)

Hey Ebmid2! So, the essays introducing each system in Arcanum Unbounded aren't part of any of the novellas; before each of the novellas, there will be a page (separate from the essays) with the story's title that also notes if it has spoilers for other cosmere stories. The essays on the different planetary systems are written by an in-universe scholar of the cosmere and have some detailed cosmere lore; it's okay if it doesn't make sense and you can skip the essays entirely and go directly to the novellas if you want. Many of the words you're unfamiliar with here actually hadn't appeared in published books at all until Arcanum Unbounded (though Brandon had used some of them in answering fan questions outside of books; all of those comments are recorded in Arcanum, though be warned that there are spoilers for all books there).
Aside, these sort of questions would be better suited for the 17th Shard forums or Discord (seriously, there are much more people there than there are here and they love discussing this stuff); Coppermind talk pages are intended more for resolving specific issues with articles—though honestly, most of that happens on our own Discord these days and I think talk page messages may not always get a quick response as a result.
