Plot Summary

Seven months later, Jorgen is on Wandering Leaf with the rest of Skyward Flight, watching the remnants of the ship’s explosion. Jorgen takes them back to Platform Prime using a taynix, trying to contain his anger and grief. They arrive on Platform Prime, and march into the command center. Jorgen explains what happened with the fake Cobb, though he doesn’t have any proof of it. Jorgen shouts at Vice Admiral Stoff, saying that Skyward Flight needs to finalize their alliance with the UrDail, and go find Cobb. Jorgen asserts that Cobb is still technically in command, and that Skyward Flight were the last people to receive orders from the real Cobb. Alanik keeps trying to locate Cobb cytonically, but with no luck.

Chapter 2Edit

Characters
Plot Summary

Two days later, Alanik still hasn’t been able to find Gran-Gran and Cobb. Alanik and Jorgen discuss allocation of pilots between ReDawn and Detritus, and what happened to Gran-Gran and Cobb. Cuna wonders if they were killed somehow, but Jorgen asserts that they are alive. Jorgen offers to help Alanik with searching for Gran-Gran, and they leave to a different room, Alanik saying that the conference room’s chairs are too square for her liking.

Chapter 3Edit

Characters
Plot Summary

Alanik takes Jorgen to a room where she has a special UrDail chair set up, which was placed there at Arturo’s suggestion. Alanik guides Jorgen through searching with his cytonic senses, teaching him to listen for people instead of looking. Jorgen thinks the concept strange, but obeys. She gives him instructions, but says that intuition will be his greatest asset. Jorgen thinks about the nature of his abilities as he searches, and wishes he could hear Spensa. Jorgen has some success in hearing a weather report, which encourages him. After further concentration, Jorgen suddenly hears a voice calling out to Spensa, asking her to respond. It says that it is the Swims Upstream, and that they have their humans and want to return them. The voice introduces herself as Kauri of the kitsen, and asks to be put in touch with Spensa. Jorgen decides to talk with Cuna and Stoff to decide what to do.

Chapter 4Edit

Characters
Plot Summary

Jorgen and Alanik go to visit Stoff in his office, and inform him of Kauri’s communication. Stoff says that he’d like to speak to them using the hypercomm, and Jorgen says that they should try to make an alliance with the kitsen, again using Cobb’s authority to back up his proposal. Stoff agrees to let Jorgen take point, and Jorgen and Alanik go to inform Cuna of the communication. Cuna thinks that the communication is authentic, and agrees to join them as they talk with Kauri again. Thirty minutes later, Jorgen, Alanik, Stoff, Cuna, and three others gather in the conference room to speak with Kauri via hypercomm.

Kauri tells them that two humans hyperjumped to their planet a few days ago, and that the kitsen stole a Superiority hypercomm to try and contact Spensa. Alanik quests out with her senses, but doesn’t feel Gran-Gran anywhere near the broadcast’s source. Kauri reports that the humans are unconscious, though their medical experts aren’t sure how to treat them. She describes the two humans, who match Gran-Gran and Cobb’s appearance. Kauri invites the humans to come to the kitsen planet and come retrieve their humans for medical attention. Stoff gives his permission for Jorgen, Alanik, and Skyward Flight to go.

Chapter 5Edit

Characters
Plot Summary

Skyward Flight hyperjumps to Evershore, which is massive and covered with water. As the flight and the medical transport make their approach, Kauri greets them over the radio and welcomes them to Evershore. She tells them to meet her at the Burrow from Which Springs Dreams Both Sweet and Sorrowful, one of their cities, and sends them the coordinates. They land on an island, where a kitsen ship waits. Kauri and her flight exit the ship, and they exchange introductions. Jorgen lets FM take the lead in the diplomatic matters, calling her their diplomatic specialist. Another starship arrives, this one heavily armed. The captain of the ship, Goro, exits and tells the humans to halt their invasion and leave the planet. Hana, one of Kauri’s companions, apologizes for Goro’s aggression and explains the kitsen’ s history with the humans. Goro demands that one of the humans come forth and fight his champion to the death in a duel. FM tries to calm Goro down, saying that they come in peace. Kauri mediates the confrontation, saying that they should consult the kitsen senate and see if they want to hear the humans out. Goro declares a feast, which is kitsen tradition to do before a duel.

Chapter 6Edit

Characters
Plot Summary

The group goes up to the city of Dreamspring, and Jorgen leaves the taynix behind in their boxes. As they walk through the city, Jorgen sees that the humans are giants to the kitsen, who are largely oblivious to the war against the Superiority. Jorgen feels guilty for bringing conflict to Evershore, and many of the kitsen are suspicious of them. Jorgen has Kauri take them to Gran-Gran and Cobb, and Alanik can’t feel any cytonic signal from Gran-Gran, and they wonder what is happening. They decide to wait until after the senate meeting before leaving with Cobb and Gran-Gran.

Chapter 7Edit

Characters
Plot Summary

When they returned to the feast, Jorgen found the other members of Skyward Flight helping prepare food. Kauri had thought it rude of the kitsen to have their guests working, but FM had insisted. As the feast begins, Goro boasts that their full bellies will make them more easy for his champion to slay. Jorgen meets Juno, a kitsen lorekeeper. Jorgen asks Juno about the food, and about the dangers of sailing on the oceans. Jorgen grows uncomfortable with the conversation, and leaves to walk down to the beach, feeling the pressure of all sorts of matters pressing down on him. FM comes by, concerned about him. She tries to talk to Jorgen about his parents’ death, but Jorgen refuses to discuss it, saying that he’s fine. He orders FM to go prepare for the senate meeting to avoid the topic, then watches sadly as the other members of the flight have fun on the beach together.

Chapter 8Edit

Characters
Plot Summary

Jorgen, Skyward Flight, Kauri, Juno, and Goro attend a senate meeting for a discussion of the human’s proposal of an alliance, though Cuna doesn’t attend, largely becuase Jorgen worries about them offending the kitsen. Adi, the director of the senate, moderates the discussion with impartiality, giving Kauri and Goro the floor first. Goro asserts that the humans are violent and are invaders, saying that they must be taught a lesson through trial by combat. Kauri defends the humans, saying that they are friendly, and are there mainly to retrieve their injured comrades. Kauri argues that the humans of the past were invaders, but that the kitsen and the current humans have a common enemy: the Superiority.

After being invited to speak, Jorgen tells the senate that he is sincere, and has no interest in fighting them. Jorgen lets his mind wander as the senators debate, and his parents’ death plays over and over again in his mind. His emotions wind up inside of him, and suddenly release as he shoots out mindblades everywhere into the senate chamber. Though the blades aren’t formed enough to badly injure any kitsen, the mindblades cause complete chaos in the senate meeting. Jorgen eventually gets the senate’s attention, and tries to recover and ask the kitsen once again to join him, spinning his explosion as a show of the power he has at his disposal to use against the Superiority. He tells them of what happened to his parents and the National Assembly, then leaves abruptly.

Chapter 9Edit

Characters
Plot Summary

FM chases after Jorgen, making him sit down and talk about what happened with his parents, insisting he needs to talk about it, rather than bottling it all up inside of him. Jorgen tells FM about what happened on the ship in detail, and convinces Jorgen that their deaths weren’t his fault. They talk about Gran-Gran’s loss of power and the voices Jorgen hears calling for help, and Jorgen wonders if whatever happened to Gran-Gran is happening to him too. He meets with the members of Skyward Flight, and Juno tells Jorgen that he’d been studying mindblades his entire life. He volunteers to teach Jorgen to control and hone his powers, and Jorgen accepts. As Jorgen goes with Juno, he tells Alanik and the others to oversee Cobb and Gran-Gran’s safe return to Detritus.

Chapter 10Edit

Characters
Plot Summary

Jorgen sits cross-legged atop the cliff above Dreamspring, Juno hovering nearby and reading exercises from a book used by the old kitsen cytonics. Up in the remote location, and with Juno wearing armor, it ensures a safe place for Jorgen to practice. Juno tells Jorgen to focus on his breathing, asserting that Jorgen is completely relaxed. He has Jorgen close his eyes and imagine calming situations, such as walking down the beach with the sun and wind against his skin. After Juno helps Jorgen visualize the mindblades, Jorgen is able to shoot one, though it dissipated quickly. Jorgen keeps practicing, meaning to gouge several grooves into a chunk of sandstone. Suddenly, Jorgen is interrupted when he hears a voice in his mind, saying that it hears him, and pleading for him to help them. Gran-Gran speaks in his mind, saying that she doesn’t have much time, but that he needs to help them. Alanik contacts Jorgen, telling him there’s something he needs to see at the medical tent. Jorgen calls for Snuggles, hyperjumps to Alanik.

Chapter 11Edit

Characters
Plot Summary

Jorgen arrives at the medical tent, and one of the med techs reports that when they tried to move Cobb and Gran-Gran, their condition deteriorated rapidly. They decide to not to take risks, and to treat them there for the time being. Jorgen tries communicating with Gran-Gran again, but to no avail. He wonders if perhaps their minds got stuck in the nowhere without their bodies. Juno says that Cobb and Gran-Gran first emerged in the main kitsen library, so the group heads there. One of the walls in the library is a smooth stone slab, with cytonic power radiating from it. Jorgen realizes that it must be a portal to the nowhere, like the one on Detritus. At Jorgen’s prompting, Juno says that all their cytonics met in a great summit in the room to compile knowledge, but they disappeared. Jorgen theorizes that the kitsen cytonics got sucked into the portal, and are trapped there, and calling for help. Before he has time to think on it more, Arturo radios Jorgen to tell him a Superiority carrier ship has arrived. Juno volunteers to accompany Jorgen into combat to help him with his mindblades.

Juno calmly reads meditation exercises from his book as Jorgen dogfights, and Jorgen manages to cut down several enemy ships with his mindblades. Goro arrives to help, temporarily setting aside his grudge with Jorgen. Jorgen has the flight protect Dreamspring, trying to minimize colateral damage and civilian casualties. Cuna radios Jorgen, who instructs them to move Cobb, Gran-Gran, and the medtechs into the library, which is underground and safer. More kitsen ships arrive, helping to defend Dreamspring. Jorgen lands as the enemy temporarily withdraws to wait for reinforcements. He puts Arturo in temporary command of the flight, and has Juno fly with Alanik to help teach her. He meets up with FM, who uses Gill to hyperjump them to Detritus in hopes of getting reinforcements.

Chapter 13Edit

Characters
Plot Summary

Jorgen and FM arrive on Detritus, and meet up with Rig. They go to Vice Admiral Stoff’s quarters, waking him up and explaining the situation to him. Stoff gives Jorgen almost full authority, allowing him to bring Wandering Leaf to Evershore to help, as well as several DDF flights. Jorgen recognizes that Stoff is giving him so much leeway so that he can avoid responsibility for Jorgen’s actions if things go wrong. Jorgen orders Rig to work on getting engineers to the outer platforms’ control center, and Jorgen expresses frustration with Stoff. Jorgen is doubting his ability to make important decisions, and FM reaffirms her faith in him. Jorgen’s resolve strengthens, and decides to commit their forces fully on Evershore.

The shield breaks, leaving the platform exposed.

As Jorgen tries to take off in his ship, the enemy cytonic arrives and shoots mindblades at him, tearing through his ship. Jorgen and the enemy cytonic both shoot mindblades at the same time, and Jorgen’s shots kill his opponent. Though he is fine, Jorgen’s ship is completely wrecked. Jorgen has Snuggles take him to Drape, who is with Rig back on Detritus. Jorgen gives him a report, and says they need to get more platforms over to Evershore. Rig shows Jorgen that there are tons of empty taynix boxes in the platform control room, but that they don’t know what many of them do, or have enough slugs to power them. Jorgen reaches out with his senses, sensing many slugs deep in the caverns. He implores with them to help, telling them that they are friends who will feed them and give them a home. Fine joins in with Jorgen, making a case for Jorgen and telling the other taynix how happy he is with the humans. Hundreds of taynix all appear in the corridor at once, of many different and new varieties. The hyperslugs had brought ones of the other varieties. Immmediately, Snuggles, Boomslug, and Fine start herding groups of slugs in front of boxes. A startled Rig says he isn’t really sure what to do, and Jorgen tells him to just do his best to figure it out.

The new flights of ships appear, aiding as more Superiority reinforcements engage. Rinakin also sends ships to support the kitsen, wanting to secure an alliance with them. Jorgen tells Juno he needs to inspect the portal in the kitsen library.

Chapter 17Edit

Characters
Plot Summary

Jorgen uses Snuggles to get to the library faster, and inspects the portal closely. He becomes sure that Gran-Gran’s soul or spirit is trapped beyond the portal, along with Cobb and the old kitsen cytonics. Jorgen quests out with his cytonic senses, looking for Spensa, and gets a vague image of her. He communicates with Doomslug, who gives off a feeling of sadness and loneliness. Jorgen tries to figure out how to enter the nowhere without passing back out immediately, like he does with hyperjumps. Gran-Gran speaks with him cytonically, saying that she heard the voices and hyperjumped to them, only to become trapped with the kitsen cytonics. Jorgen discovers that the portal is locked on both sides, and Gran-Gran tells Jorgen that he is different than Spensa, but still in a good way. As Jorgen focuses on the portal, he gets a grasp of how to open it, and sends instructions to a kitsen cytonic to help him on their side. The portal unlocks, and an ancient kitsen hobbles through, followed by a dozen more.

Jorgen contacts Alanik, who reports a bomber ship, with what Jorgen knows is a lifebuster. Jorgen speaks into Arturo’s mind using his ability, and Arturo reports that the lifebuster ship is heading for Dreamspring. Going out onto the beach again, Jorgen gives orders for Alanik to try and get the lifebuster out and into the atmosphere. Jorgen also offers to let the kitsen senators escape to Detritus using the transport they’d intended for Cobb and Gran-Gran, and assigns a few members of Skyward Flight to oversee it. Kimmalyn shoots down the bomber, and Alanik snags the bomb with her light-lance. She takes it out of range and hyperjumps away as it explodes. More Superiority carriers arrive, and this time their pilots spread out to attack other kitsen cities. Jorgen sees that their goal is to make the kitsen pay a heavy price by inflicting a lot of collateral damage.

Chapter 19Edit

Jorgen orders members of his flight to evacuate as many kitsen civilians as possible, with as many transports as they can find. Jorgen talks briefly with Rig, and learns that Juno is writing an account of Jorgen’s actions. Jorgen hyperjumps them to Rig, again filling him in. He tells Rig that they need to get as many platforms to Evershore as they can, as fast as possible. Jorgen communicates his intent to Fine, who communicates with the slugs in the boxes. All the slugs hyperjump, and Jorgen looks outside. He sees not only Evershore, but also Detritus itself. He realizes that not only did they bring several platforms to Evershore, but they brought the entire planet of Detritus.

Chapter 20Edit

Characters
Plot Summary

Powered by the many boomslugs in their boxes, the many platforms begin to fire hyper weapons, shredding enemy ships with massive mindblades. Rig realizes that the can move the planet with the command platforms navigation system, and he and the other engineers try to figure it out. Kauri radios Jorgen and tells him that the arrival of Detritus is causing a massive tidal wave to form on Evershore, and that their planets might rip each other apart. Rig guesses that the planets aren’t ripping each other apart because Detritus is equipped with some kind of GravCap system. Rig and his engineers work on setting up coordinates for the platforms, and begins sending them to protect various locations on Evershore. Though Rig starts moving Detritus away, Kauri reports that the tidal wave will still hit Dreamspring. Jorgen warns the medtechs, saying he may have to get them out. Jorgen gathers up Fine and several other commslugs, showing them the battle. He sends out feelings of confidence and strength to their allies, and Fine and the others help boost his signal. The Superiority forces begin to lose soundly, and eventually they retreat back to their carriers, which hyperjump away.

Chapter 21Edit

Characters
Plot Summary

After the battle, Jorgen overlooks the city of Dreamspring. Though its lower structures are heavily damaged, the main upper city remains mostly unharmed. Jorgen apologizes to Juno for what happened, then goes down to meet Stoff, who is arriving. As Cobb walks up, Jorgen decides not to expose Stoff’s cowardice. FM, however, speaks bluntly and honestly to Cobb, saying that he dumped all the responsibility on Jorgen. Cobb reprimands Stoff, and tells him to leave. FM also leaves at Cobb’s request, and Jorgen apologizes to Cobb for acting rashly. Cobb tells Jorgen that he had been awake for a while, listening in on the radio, but hadn’t let the medtechs tell Jorgen lest it distract him. Cobb decides to promote Jorgen to vice admiral, which is a shock to Jorgen. Cobb also decides to retire from service, at least for a time, and gives operational command to Jorgen. Cobb reasons that Jorgen and his flight have the most experience with other planets and the Superiority now, and that people who don’t want to take control make the best leaders. Cobb tells Jorgen that his parents would’ve been proud of him, and Jorgen breaks down crying. Cobb comforts him, and tells him he can do what he wishes with Stoff. Jorgen decides to relieve Stoff of his position, but to not punish him further.

EpilogueEdit

Characters
Plot Summary

Jorgen leaves Cobb, talking to Goro and Cuna about the affects of the battle. Goro gives Jorgen his support. Jorgen talks with FM, and fills her in on his promotion. With him no longer able to fly into combat with Skyward Flight, Jorgen decides to put Arturo in charge of the flight. Jorgen wants to put FM in charge of Detritus’ diplomatic program, which means her stepping down from active duty like him. FM doesn’t like the idea of Skyward Flight going on into battle without her to protect them, but she agrees to do it. FM leaves to go tell Rig, and Jorgen is left by himself. He thinks about Spensa, wishing he could talk to her. He reaches out with his senses, and can feel Doomslug, and how she is worried about Spensa. He thinks about how Spensa isn’t the only one who can pull off impossible tasks, and is determined to make sure she has a home to come back to when she returns.
