Kaza is a member of the Liaforan royal family who attempts to visit Akinah on the First Dreams, seeking a cure for her Soulcasting savanthood.[1]
Appearance and Personality
By the time of her appearance, Kaza has begun showing the effects of being a Soulcasting savant, to the point "where her disfigurements [a]re starkly obvious": parts of her body are turning into smoke, and she estimates that, optimistically, she has a year or two to live.

... her hair, her ears, and now parts of her face were disintegrating. There was a hole in her cheek through which you could see her jaw and teeth. Lines of smoke rimmed the hole; the flesh seemed to be burning away. Air passed through it when she spoke, altering her voice, and she had to tip her head all the way back to drink anything. Her condition has also caused her to lose familiarity with aspects of human behavior. When Droz, a sailor on the ship, speaks to her, she has to consciously remind herself of reasons why someone might do such a thing. The ship's cook later describes her as "barely human anymore", and she resists the cook's poison much longer than everyone else on the ship.
She has an independent streak and has long felt controlled by the royal family; she makes her trip to Akinah in defiance of them and resents the way they essentially imprisoned her to maintain control the Soulcaster. She makes it clear to Captain Vazrmeb that, while she is willing to help him, she is a person and not a thing to be used.
History
Kaza is a cousin of the Liaforan prince and is assigned at a young age to use a royal Soulcaster, which is "always to be kept in the royal family". She grows extremely attached to the Soulcaster over the years and uses it to the point of becoming a Soulcasting savant. Eventually, she is hired by the Captain Vazrmeb of the First Dreams to help him navigate to Akinah, which also furthers her own goal of curing her savanthood. She partially Soulcasts away the rock barriers around the island, but the ship's cook, a Dysian Aimian, poisons her and the rest of the ship's crew to prevent them from reaching the island. Kaza makes it onto land but is on her way to succumbing to the poison; she Soulcasts the ground around her into smoke, finally giving in to the urge to include her own body in a Soulcasting, so that she can choose her own destiny rather than dying of the poison and allowing the cook to take her Soulcaster.
Abilities and Attributes
Kaza is intimately familiar with the use of a Soulcaster that can produce smoke. She can Soulcast part of an object, which is more difficult than Soulcasting an entire object. She can see, at least partially, into the Cognitive Realm, including the full shapes of spren.
