Runian, also known as John West, is a former member of the Fabian Augments cartel and Sefawynn's husband.[1]

Appearance and Personality[edit]

Runian is a muscular man of average height, who wears sturdy boots with laces, a long shirt he covers with a brown tunic, and blue jeans. He has a vibrant cloak to finish off an outfit that a cosplayer might wear.[2]

He struggles to decide what he likes, and to help him decide, he has a habit of making star ratings.[3]

Abilities and Attributes[edit]

Like many people from his time, Runian has medical nanites that protect him from diseases and heal his wounds.[4]. The nanites can also stop hair growth so that Runian does not have to shave,[5] provide oxygen in case of drowning,[6] regulate temperature, modify taste, and reduce the need for sleep. Consumption of carbon materials, such as charcoal, can replenish nanites.[7] Runian has a visual overlay that shows him his status[8].

He also has plating augments that prevent most weapons from piercing his skin, except on his chest and skull where the plates are not active. He has additional augments for night vision, optical zoom, skin camouflage, and voice modification[9]

He has artistic skills that are impressive by medieval standards,[10] and he is good at lying.[11]

History[edit]

Early Life[edit]

In his childhood, he would often go fishing with a woman he called Grandmother Dobson, he still looks fondly upon those memories.[12]

He joined art school, but he felt as if he could never compete with anyone else in the school, he dropped out.[13] Following his dropping out, he tried to join the police with Ryan Chu, training as a forensic artist, but eventually dropped out of that as well.[12]

Washed up and with nowhere to go, he joined Fabian Augments, but ultimately was just used as a door guard after his career as a boxer who played in rigged fights to earn his boss, Ulric, money.[14][15][16] During his last fight, his chest and head augments were purposely turned off, and he threw the fight with Quinn, but due to the lack of augments he was damaged far more than usual and had to quit.[15][17][16]

At some point, Jen left for what he thought was Europe, and disappeared. Several months later he called her family to see if she was alright, and had her grandmother inform him, wrongly, that she was dead. Believing that she passed away in an accident, he spiraled further into despair.[18]

New Dimension[edit]

Hating his life and wanting to escape, he stole into Ulric's office and choose a random dimension to go into, but without the proper preparation, he crashed into it and lost most of his memory.[2] Here he was found by the natives of the dimension, and mistaken for an aelv; and in this misunderstanding, he was knocked out and taken captive.[8]

After saving the country from Ulric and the Hordamen, and after learning how he could prevent his presence from harming the entities around him, he decided to continue living in the dimension, and eventually married Sefawynn.[1][expand]

Relationships[edit]

Sefawynn[edit]

John first met Sefawynn when he was captured just after his arrival to the dimension. Sefawyn is a Weswaran skop and decides that John is not an Aelv but is just a charlatan. After Sefawynn's brother is taken they leave with Ealstan the thegn of Stenford.[19] Throughout the journey John and Sefawynn grow closer together, eventually falling in love. In the end John decides to stay as his interference will protect Sefawynn from the wrath of Woden. Eventually they get married.[1]
