Jezrien's Symbol
by Isaac Stewart

Jezrien, also known as Jezerezeh'Elin and Yaezir, was one of the ten Heralds of The Almighty and the patron of the Order of Windrunners.

Appearance and Personality

He was the leader of the Heralds, and was described as having a royal bearing. He looked about 30 at the Last Desolation, with a short neat black beard. He used to be a king, but it has been several centuries since he reigned. He seemed distraught at the ending of the Oathpact.

"Better that one man should suffer than ten," Jezrien whispered. He seemed so cold. Like a shadow caused by heat and light falling on someone honourable and true, casting this black imitation behind.

— Jezriens response when questioned by Kalak if it would be moral to leave Talenel by himself.[2]

It is likely that he had a strong sense of morality at some point, both as leader of men and of the Heralds as seen manifest in his shame in leaving behind his old friend to suffer.[2]

History

In the past Jezrien had been a king. He may or may not have been married but had at least one child, Shalash.[3] 99 Desolations after the beginning of the Oathpact[4] he, along with the other heralds save for Talenel who had died, decided that they could no longer withstand the torture they faced in between desolations and thus decided to abandon their pledge. He was chosen by the rest to wait and see if Kalak had survived and if so, to let him know they would not return to their place of punishment. He then summoned his honorblade and left it stuck point-first into the ground, before taking off by himself.[2]

It is unknown how Jezrien had spent the 4,500 years between the prelude and the events taking place during the Stormlight Archive. However, Nale does mention that he is still alive.[5]

Powers and Abilities

Praise Yaezir, Herald of Kings. May he lead in wisdom. If he ever stops drooling

Darkness's mention of Jezrien to the viziers of Azir[5]

As a Herald of The Almighty it is likely that at one point Jezrien would have been among the more powerful of individuals on Roshar.

Herald of Kings

As the leader of men and Heralds alike, Jezrien's leadership qualities were likely first class. Taln stated that his responsibilities in preparing for a Desolation would include teaching leadership to men.[1] His position as a Herald also confers a resistance to aging.[2][5]

Surgebinding

As patron of the Order of Windrunners, it is likely that he could bind the surges of Gravitation and Adhesion.

Jezrien in other Religions

[The Makabaki] worship Jezrien, though they don’t accept him as a figure from the Vorin religion. They name him the only god.

Teft about the Makabaki[6]

In Azir Jezrien is known as "Yaezir".[5]

Honorblade

Jezrien's Honorblade grants the wielder the powers of a Windrunner. Szeth was in possession of the blade until his fight with Kaladin, who cut off Szeth's hand and took the sword.

Quotes

Kalak looked into the immortal king’s eyes. Black smoke rose from a small patch to their left. Groans of the dying haunted them from behind. There, in Jezrien’s eyes, Kalak saw anguish and grief. Perhaps even cowardice. This was a man hanging from a cliff by a thread.

Kalak's thoughts on Jezrien's state during the time of Aharietiam.[2]
