To a Seon there is no above or beneath, there are only those we love. And we serve those we love.

—Ien to Raoden[1]

Ien is a Seon bound to Prince Raoden of Arelon.[2] He is named for Aon Ien, which means "Wisdom" and is a healing in AonDor.

When Raoden is taken by the Shaod Ien undergoes a similar change, loosing his sentient connection to Raoden. Though he seems to follow Raoden in Elantris too, they are not able to communicate with one another.[3]
