The Evil is a semi-mythological being on Threnody, the Shardworld that contains the Forests of Hell.[1]
It is said to be what killed everyone in Homeland back in the Fallen World.[1]
Silence's grandmother believes that the Forescouts will be the ones to eventually defeat the Evil.[1]
It is rumored that the White Fox has shaken hands with the Evil.[1]

In his Q&A session at the midnight release of Shadows of Self, Brandon confirmed that the Evil has some kind of relation to Ruin. It is unknown what this relation is or how Ruin influenced Threnody in the first place.
