This novella follows Lift as she travels with her spren [[Wyndle]] to [[Yeddaw]] in [[Tashikk]] from [[Azimir]] where her friend [[Gawx]] had recently been crowned emperor. Upon arriving at the city, she gets passed the border by hiding in a grain smuggler's grain, and then runs inside the city using her abilities as an [[edgedancer]]. When she gets in, her goal is to eat all ten varieties of pancakes that they make traditionally at that time of year. She then sees [[Nale]], whom she calls "Darkness," and follows him in the hopes that she can rescue the fledgling [[Radiant]] that he is trying to kill. First however, she needs to get eat because she is extremely hungry and feeds off of food instead of [[stormlight]] to fuel her radiant powers. She finds an orphan and instantly understands the child's strange dialect. This may have something to do with her edgedancer abilities. The orphan directs her to a food kitchen run by the [[Stump]], an extremely ugly and grumpy lady who may be involved in money laundering. The Stump is upset because many children come to her who have some sort of mental illness, and after she feeds them they no loner have it. She encounters a man who asks her what part of the body she is most like, and she says the nose because she's full of weird gunk and you never know what will come out of her. She then goes to find Nale. She goes to a large library and asks one of the scribes if any weird stuff is written down. At first they try to make her leave, but then Gawx communicates by [[spanreed]] and tells everybody to listen to her. They do, and she takes the chief scribes hat, eats pancakes, and makes them all look for anything "weird". She also makes everybody address her as "your pankakefullness". Eventually she realizes that the Stump is probably a Radiant, which is why she launders money. She needs infused spheres. Also, she is healing the sick kids without knowing it. Lift then goes out to find Nale. She then encounters the man who asked her what part of the body she was most like. He is actually a [[sleepless]], which frightens Lift as he is made of cremlings.
