A darkeyes is a person with dark colored eyes, such as brown or black. Darkeyes also include other colors that are muddled and hard to distinguish from brown or black.[1] In the Vorin kingdoms of Alethkar, Jah Keved, and Kharbranth, they are the peasantry, being inferior to the lighteyes. A wealthy and high-ranking darkeyes (of the first or second nahn) is addressed by the title Citizen.
Although all darkeyes are socially inferior to the lighteyes, they themselves are classified according to the nahn caste system, a ten level hierarchy indicating one's social position. The first and second nahn consists of highly skilled craftsmen, doctors, and other skilled professions, while the tenth nahn consists of serfs legally restricted from being able to leave the land they are on.
A darkeyes of the first nahn can actually be more influential and wealthy than a lighteyes of the tenth dahn, even though the lighteyes would be of a higher social ranking. A darkeyes of one of the higher nahns is permitted to wed a lighteyes of a lower dahn.
