The Coppermind has spoilers for all of Brandon's published works, now including The Sunlit Man. Information about books that have not yet been released, like Stormlight 5, is allowed only on meta-pages for the books themselves. For more details, see our spoiler policy. Adonalsium is a mysterious term used in the cosmere, which could refer to the power of Creation or a god. It has not been revealed what Adonalsium explicitly is, but its power is seen in the Shards of Adonalsium, which act as imperfect gods in the cosmere. In The Way of Kings[1] it is implied that there are sixteen Shards.

Before the Shattering

Anyway, there was a God. Adonalsium. I don't know if it was a force or a being, though I suspect the latter

Khriss' explanation.[2]

At some point in the past, Adonalsium created the original humans.[2] It has been confirmed that Hoid was present when Adonalsium Shattered[3], that the Shattering left exactly the sixteen Shards it did for a specific reason[4][5], and that the shattering was intentional.[6]

For unknown reasons at least some of the 16 who shattered Adonalsium did so believing it was the final option left to them, suggesting its power may have been targeted as a last ditch attempt at self-preservation.[2]

The Shattering may or may not be a result of the failed plot to destroy Adonalsium.[7] At the time of the Shattering, Adonalsium was consciously opposed by something, and that thing is still around.[8] It created some form of weapon.[9]

Shards of Adonalsium

After Adonalsium shattered into its present form, the pieces were given to or taken by individuals that then had the powers of the aspect of the Shard of Adonalsium. These people tend to act like imperfect gods, capable of creating and destroying worlds. Many of these "gods" give specific magical powers to the people on their worlds, and most of Brandon Sanderson's novels take place in one of these planets. The nature of the common people's powers is modeled after the power of the Shard in question.

The existence of a single origin of these shards have been hinted at in Sanderson's novels:

I sense shards of something long ago, a fractured presence, something spanning the void.

I have delved and searched, and have only been able to come up with a single name:

Adonalsium. Who, or what, it was, I do not yet know.

Sazed[10], emphasis added

Another example is the The Way of Kings epigraphs, which mentions that:

Ati was once a kind and generous man, and you saw what became of him.

Ati was the name of the person who held Ruin before being killed by Vin holding Preservation at the end of The Hero of Ages. Intentionally killing Ati went against the intent of Preservation, but as Vin had not yet become attuned to it, she was able to use its power to her own ends.

It is also possible that those who take the power of a Shard may be able to resist this change to their personality by force of will, like when Sazed gained the powers of both Ruin and Preservation:

[Ruin and Preservation] threatened to annihilate each other.

And yet, because he was of one mind on how to use them, he could keep them separate.

They could touch without destroying each other, if he willed it.

Sazed's revelation on the Hero of Ages[12]

How long, or under what conditions, a person can keep their own will is unknown. However, after only ~340 years, Harmony had come to espouse balance and a non-intervention policy while ensuring that both good and bad things continued to happen.[13]

Known Shards

The following shards are currently known:

Shard Original Bearer Current Planet
Ambition Uli Da near Threnody
Autonomy Bavadin Taldain [14][15]
Cultivation unknown female Roshar [16]
Devotion Aona Sel [17][18][19]
Dominion Skai Sel [20][18][19]
Endowment Edgli Nalthis [21]
Honor Tanavast Roshar [22]
Odium Rayse Braize [23]
Preservation Leras Scadrial
Ruin Ati Scadrial
Survival Shard unknown unknown

Harmony is the combination of Preservation and Ruin, is held by Sazed and remains on Scadrial. Although it is common to refer to Harmony as a single shard, it is still considered by Brandon as two.[24]

Ambition, Devotion, Dominion, and Honor are all splintered with the original holders deceased. Others of the sixteen shards are definitely dead and shattered, but which ones or how many is not known.[25]

Although Odium is on Braize, his influence is felt on Roshar.[23]

Trivia

The name Adonalsium is derived from a Hebrew name for God, Adonai[26] (meaning "the Lord" or "God", literally "my Lord"). Additionally, Adonalsium may be an anagram of "a mind, a soul."
