Revision as of 18:28, 13 November 2019

This page lists all of Brandon Sanderson's works, written or unwritten, that have not been published. Some of these are written novels that have been "trunked", some of which have been re-written or cannibalized from. Some are ideas Brandon has talked about briefly but it is unknown if they will ever actually be written. The remainder are forthcoming works that, while unwritten, will come out eventually.

A list of those works that have been published can be found in the Bibliography article.

Forthcoming Works

Cosmere works

The Stormlight Archive
Books 4 and 5
Book 4 features flashbacks from Eshonai and is tentatively titled The Rhythm of War.[1] Book 5 will end the first arc and feature flashbacks from Szeth.[2][3] It is tentatively titled Stones Unhallowed.[4]
Books 6-10
Book 6 will feature flashbacks from Lift, Book 7 from Renarin, Book 8 from Ash, Book 9 from Taln, and Book 10 from Jasnah.[5] Will not be written until after the Mistborn Era 3 trilogy.[6]
untitled Wandersail novella
a novella likely involving the modern-day Rosharan ship Wandersail,[7] which was named after the Wandersail of legends.
untitled Lunamor novella
a novella about Lunamor, the Unkalaki also known as Rock.[8] It is set post-Oathbringer, involving him returning to his homeland.[9]
untitled Rysn novella
a novella about Rysn, the Thaylen woman featured in the Interludes.[9]
untitled Lopen novella
a novella about Lopen, the Herdazian from Bridge Four set between The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance.[9]
Mistborn
Mistborn Era 2[10]
The Lost Metal,[11] the final Wax and Wayne novel. This was pushed back due to various side projects but is one of Brandon's top priorities.[12]
Mistborn Era 3 trilogy
The second in the planned set of three trilogies. Takes place in an urban setting with a 1980's technology level and is like a Cold War era spy thriller. To be written between Stormlight 5 and Stormlight 6.[13][11]
Mistborn Era 4 trilogy
A space opera, with interplanetary travel. Sanderson has confirmed Hoid to be a main character in this Era.[14]
Dragonsteel
A series of books that will only be written after Stormlight Archive is completed.[15] The number of installments has changed over time but it was most recently stated to be three books.[16]
The Liar of Partinel/The Lightweaver of Rens
Hoid's origin story.[17] They are likely to be reworked into the Dragonsteel sequence, as the series needs to be almost entirely reworked.[18][17]
Elantris trilogy 2-3
Takes place ten years later with an all new cast.[19][20] Need to be written before the third, 1980s-esque, Mistborn trilogy. and likely to be written between Stormlight 5 and 6.[21][22][23]
Elantris sequel
Follows Kaise, Daorn, and Adien as ambassadors to Fjorden.[19][20]
Elantris finale
Nightblood
Sequel to Warbreaker.[24] Will be written sometime after Stormlight 5, possibly after Stormlight 6; Mistborn Era 3 and Elantris sequels are likely to come first.[25][26][24]
The Silence Divine
A novella set on Ashyn in the Rosharan system, where diseases grant magical abilities.[27] At one point, it was likely to be renamed, as Brandon had recently written another novela with "Silence" in the title, though it has been several years since then.[28] Unlikely to be written anytime soon, as Brandon needs to research more about immunology and has limited time.[29]
Aether of Night
Brandon's tenth novel, various elements have been cannibalized for other works (such as Decay becoming Ruin). No longer is trunked.[30] Brandon has said this will be drastically different from the unpublished novel and will only retain the location in the cosmere and the magic system.[31]
The Dust Brigade
A novel set on Threnody has been part of Brandon's plan for the cosmere since before he was published. Originally planned to be the story of the people who fled to the Forests of Hell after the Evil destroyed their Homeland. He has recently considered changing the story to that of an expedition being sent back to the Homeland.[32]
untitled Silverlight story
A novella set in Silverlight[32]
untitled Sixth of the Dusk sequel
A novella[33] with a planned setting in the Cognitive Realm.[34]

Non-cosmere works

Skyward sequels
Three sequels are planned. The first, Starsight,[35] is already completed and undergoing the editing process.[21] The second has a working title of Nowhere[35] and is high on the priority list.[21]
The Apocalypse Guard 1-3
A follow-up of The Reckoners for Random House. Features a team that goes to alternate universes to prevent world-ending events.[36] Initial attempts at writing the first installment "did not work".[31] Brandon attempted a somewhat unusual collaboration with author Dan Wells to try and fix the project.[37][38] The collaboration progressed with additional revisions and "[got] weirder".[12] After the revisions, neither Brandon nor Dan was totally satisfied and the project was shelved with no firm plans to revisit it.[39]
Standalone Mizzy book
In the world of The Reckoners.[32] Has not been written, but is still in the long-term plans.[21]
The Rithmatist series
The Aztlanian (Rithmatist 2)[40][11] Writing a sequel to The Rithmatist has proved to be difficult.[21] Brandon still intends to wrap the series up, but has various other projects that will be worked on first.[12]
The Nebraskian (Rithmatist 3)[41]
Alcatraz Bastille versus the Evil Librarians: The Worldspire
Sequel to The Dark Talent to be "written" by Bastille, as Alcatraz refuses to continue writing.[42] Currently undergoing revisions, it will be the last book in the series.[12]
Dark One
a YA series about a person who, instead of being the one destined to save the world, is the one destined to destroy it. It was originally going to be in the cosmere but Brandon changed his mind. [11] At the earliest it will be written after The Apocalypse Guard trilogy, Alcatraz 6, and The Aztlanian are all completed.[43] This entered into development as a TV series with an accompanying podcast, graphic novel, and novels/novellas.[44] Brandon has at least two prequel novels outlined.[45] A graphic novel is underway and may be the first glimpse of the story.[12]
Adamant
was The Lurker.[11] Planned as a sequence of six novellas, two of which will be written by other authors. Brandon wants to wait until all four of his novellas are written before finding co-authors. Only one episode has been written, but he has had a breakthrough in some visuals and worldbuilding. The second novella could be written at any time.[32] There was some consideration of a shared universe with Skyward, but this is not likely.[46]
Untitled heavy metal novel, formerly Death By Pizza
A novel originally featuring a necromancer pizza deliveryman.[40] Was on hiatus for years.[31] Progress is now being made, but the main character's job has been changed to heavy metal singer.[47] Brandon decided to collaborate with Peter Orullian due to his knowledge of heavy metal culture.[12] A draft was completed in 2018 and Brandon expects publication in the next few years.[12]

Potential Works

These are projects that Brandon has mentioned as possibilities but there are no firm plans in place.

Cosmere Works

Second Set of White Sand graphic novels
These would be set on the Darkside of Taldain, and would also be a trilogy. They would not, however, be prose.
Parallel Mistborn novel from Hoid's perspective
Like Back to the Future Part II.[48]
1940's Mistborn
Potentially more short adventures set before Era 3.[11]
Near-future Cyberpunk Mistborn
Potentially more adventures set between Era 3 and 4.[49]
Story set in the Rose Empire on Sel
An outline has been completed, but there are no firm plans for finishing the story.[50] Would not be centered on Wan ShaiLu. Could be published as graphic novels.
YA book set in a minor shardworld
It would follow one of Hoid's apprentices, set in the future of the cosmere (between era 3 and 4) stranded on a minor shardworld and trying to figure out their kite-based magic system.[51][52]

Non-Cosmere Works

Mulholland Homebrew's Sinister Shop of Secret Pets
Middle grade/YA humor, about a girl who accidentally apprentices herself to a guy who runs a fantasy pet shop.[53]
Zeek Harbinger, Destroyer of Worlds
Middle grade scifi humor, potentially a follow-up to the Alcatraz series.[54] About a young man who whenever he visits a planet, the planet blows up shortly after for various reasons (such as a nuclear catastrophe). Each book would be set on a different world and tell the story of how it blows up.[53]
Soulburner
A space opera/fantasy hybrid.[30] Only an outline was completed, and it appears to be on indefinite hold.[55] It may be a good fit for a video game, and could be renamed Starburner.[12]
The King's Necromancer[13]
The Eyes
A space opera novella inspired by Fermi's Paradox.[32]
The Original
A novella in which the government creates clones to track down and potentially replace the criminals from which they were created.[12] An outline is completed and this could be released as an audiobook.[12]

"Trunked" Novels

These are works that are unlikely to ever be published either because elements have been co-opted for use in other books (as with Mythwalker and Aether of Night) or because the book has been re-written from scratch (as with White Sand Prime and The Way of Kings Prime).

White Sand Prime
Brandon's first novel, later re-written as White Sand (prose).[54]
Star's End
Brandon's second novel, a short alien-relations/sci-fi story.[54]
Lord Mastrell
Brandon's third novel, a sequel to White Sand Prime.[54]
Knight Life
Brandon's fourth novel, a fantasy comedy.[54]
The Sixth Incarnation of Pandora
Brandon's fifth novel, a far future scifi involving immortal warriorsTemplate:Annotation ref
Dragonsteel Prime
Brandon's seventh novel, served as his Master's thesis. Planned to be re-written,
White Sand (prose)
Brandon's eighth novel, a complete rewrite of the first. This later served as the basis for his graphic novels. This is the novel that got Brandon his agent.[citation needed]
Mythwalker
Brandon's ninth novel, a book that included the characters Vivenna and Siri [56]
Mistborn Prime
Brandon's eleventh novel, elements were later combined with Final Empire Prime for Mistborn: The Final Empire.
Final Empire Prime
Brandon's twelfth novel, elements were later combined with Mistborn Prime for Mistborn: The Final Empire.
The Way of Kings Prime
Brandon's thirteenth novel, later re-written as The Way of Kings. While it is not confirmed, Brandon has said that this could be published once The Stormlight Archive is completely finished.
