Stonewards are the infantry and ground troops of the Radiants and are renowned as their finest soldiers. (A title that, on occasion, the Windrunners dispute.) They tend to attract those who are most interested in warfare, prowess with weapons, or athletics of any sort. They like a challenge, and in times of peace are seen engaging in (and running) various sporting events of both a military and non-military nature. Many enjoy the outdoors, and you’ll find exploration enthusiasts among them, as well as those who just like the fresh air. The Order of Stonewards is an order of the Knights Radiant on Roshar.[1]

The Stonewards were Surgebinders who used the Surges of Cohesion and Tension, and they are associated with the topaz polestone. So far very little is known about what powers the Stonewards had. The glow of their Shardplate is amber.[2] The patron Herald of the Stonewards is Talenel. In Shadesmar, The spren of the Stonewards look like stone and their skin cracks when they move.[3]

Ideals of the Stonewards

The Ideals of the Knights Radiant, also known as the Immortal Words, are a set of rules by which the Radiants lived. The First Ideal is shared by all of the orders, and is used as a motto for the Knights Radiant as a whole. Each of the orders then has an additional four Ideals that are unique to that order. The Ideals of the Order of Stonewards all focus on working with a team and supporting others, which led them to put others' interests before their own. Of the orders, they were some of the least likely to bend their Ideals.[4]

The First Ideal

Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination

—The First Ideal of the Knights Radiant[5]

A possible second Ideal for Stonewards is "I will stand where others fall"[6]

Abilities

The Shardbearer pressed his hand against the incline leading up to the Voidbringer, and again the stone seemed to writhe. Steps formed in the rock, as if it were made of wax that could flow and be shaped.

—Dalinar's observations of a Stoneward in a vision[7]

The Stonewards use the Surges of Cohesion and Tension.

Their exact Powers are so far unknown, although in Dalinar's visions a stoneward is seen to be able to reshape stone to some extent. This ability is based on the surge of cohesion. This ability lets them reshape things other than stone, but not flesh.[8]

History

The author of Words of Radiance, says that the Stonewards were exmplars of resolve, strength, and dependability while also being stubborn to a fault. The author notes this made them a better match for the nature and temperament of their Herald than any other order.[1]

They served as the Radiants' front-line troops.[9]

Stoneward oaths focus on team dynamics, on learning to work with others, and on being there for those who need them. They put the interests of others before their own, and will not bend their Ideals for the sake of convenience. [10]

Known Stonewards

  • The patron of the Stonewards was Talenel, Stonesinew, Herald of War.
  • Talatin was a member of the Order of the Stonewards, before the Recreance.

At this time, no new members of the Order of Stonewards have been revealed.

Quotes

Now, as each order was thus matched to the nature and temperament of the Herald it named patron, there was none more archetypal of this than the Stonewards, who followed after Talenelat'Elin, Stonesinew, Herald of War: they thought it a point of virtue to exemplify resolve, strength, and dependability. Alas, they took less care for imprudent practice of their stubbornness, even in the face of proven error.
