The Eastern Crownlands was an area of land in the southeastern part of Alethkar.[1] As the Eastern Crownlands did not appear to be attached to any highprince, it seems likely that they were the property of Elhokar, the king of Alethkar. People of the Crownlands, particularly those from Rathalas, have a distinctive nasally accent.[2]

Geography

It contained the Deathbend River. It borders princedoms Bethab, Sebarial, Kholin, and Thanadal.[fn 1] The Eastern Crownlands formed the eastern shore of the Sea of Spears and was also bordered by the Unclaimed Hills to the west and the Frostlands to the south. This is the area of land in Alethkar closest to the Shattered Plains. The rockbuds in this region consume large amounts of water and grow to massive sizes, with trunks as tall as a man's waist and vines as thick as a wrist.[3]

History

The Eastern Crownlands is one of the areas conquered during Gavilar Kholin's quest to unite Alethkar into a single kingdom. The city of Rathalas and its leaders rebelled against Gavilar's rule both before and after the unification of the country. After attempts to politically quell the situation fail, Dalinar Kholin and Torol Sadeas march on Rathalas and raze the city to set an example for the other highprinces. During this battle, Dalinar's wife, Evi Kholin, is killed.
