Lerasium is notable as it is the condensed power of the [[Shard]] [[Preservation]].  The only known source were beads found at the Well of Ascension. Presumably, the name "lerasium" is inherited from [[Leras]], the name of the original holder of the Shard Preservation, just as the name [[atium]] is inherited from [[Ati]], the original holder of the Shard [[Ruin]]. Lerasium cannot be combined with atium to make [[harmonium]], nor can harmonium be broken down into lerasium and atium by normal, mechanical means.{{book ref|mb7|13}}{{book ref|mb7|15}}{{wob ref|12145}} However, lerasium and atium can be divided from harmonium through supernatural methods.{{book ref|mb7|71}}

== Allomantic Use ==
For normal people, burning lerasium forges a permanent [[Connection]] between them and Preservation, turning them into very powerful Mistborn by rewriting their [[spiritweb|spiritual DNA]].{{wob ref|10116}} For people who are already Mistborn, the same effect increases their power.{{wob ref|1304}} However, turning people into Mistborn is only a side effect of burning lerasium; if someone who knew how to use it correctly were to burn it, it would have a different, as of yet unknown, effect.{{wob ref|7708}} Someone knowledgeable enough could use the rewrite of their spiritual DNA to achieve a different result than becoming a Mistborn.{{wob ref|5499}}{{wob ref|11939}} Burning [[duralumin]] in conjunction with lerasium does not have any effect on the strength of the Mistborn created,{{wob ref|3618}} but the size of the bead does affect the strength of the Mistborn created.{{wob ref|341}}

Alloys of lerasium have the side effect of turning those who burn them into [[Misting]]s of the alloy used.{{wob ref|7624}} Alloys of lerasium and other God Metals can make those who burn them gain the [[Investiture]] associated with the God Metal.{{wob ref|10624}} The primary effects of lerasium alloys are also unknown.

If someone were able to burn the amount of lerasium needed to become an Allomantic [[savant]] with the metal, they would Ascend and become the holder of Preservation, similar to what happened when [[Vin]] consumed the [[mists]].{{wob ref|1248}} This is due to the nature of the metal as the condensed power of Preservation.

== Other Uses ==
Brandon has stated that lerasium has varying effects based on its state of matter. In solid form it's effects are very rigid. In vaporous form it can apparently provide an unlimited source of metals to a Mistborn. In liquid form it can make a person a Shard temporarily.

== History ==
Lerasium was created by Leras.{{wob ref|6046}} [[Rashek]] collected the beads,{{wob ref|140}} after taking the power of Preservation at the [[Well of Ascension]], and used them to entice foreign kings to become his allies.{{wob ref|8001}} He left two beads near the Well, for reasons unknown.{{msh ref|2|1}}

However, neither of these beads were used prior to the fall of the Final Empire. One bead was fed to [[Elend]] to save his life after being attacked by Leras, whose hand was directed by [[Kelsier]], in an attempt to prevent Vin from releasing Ruin from the Well.{{book ref|mb2|58}}{{book ref|mb2|59}}{{msh ref|2|4}} The other was stolen and consumed by [[Hoid]], after he used the Well to transition from the Cognitive Realm to the Physical.{{wob ref|12210}}{{msh ref|2|1}}

[[Waxillium_Ladrian|Wax]] was later able to split ettmetal using [[trellium]] to create more lerasium, which was later used by Wax and [[Wayne]], creating the first known Mistborns since the [[Spook|Lord Mistborn]] right after the [[Catacendre]].{{book ref|mb7|71}} [[Kelsier]] wishes to use it to create an army of Mistborn to fight against the armies of [[Autonomy]], though Harmony rejects these plans.{{book ref|mb7|epilogue|4}}
